Leadfeather Yak 55

Here's a build I made of the popular 32" Leadfeather Yak 55I made this one with heavier EPP foam (1.9#) than most guys use, and I think this build would work really well for streamer combat, while still being a pretty good 3D flyer.  Total cost of foam and parts is around $70.  See the parts list below.

The foam can be cut using plans found on rcgroups, and there is a build guide posted.  I used the "EPPYak55_full_chg_d.pdf" version.  There's also a "EPPYak55_tiled_chg_d.pdf" version that can be printed on standard 8.5"x11" letter-sized sheets.  I used UHU Por for gluing the foam pieces together.

A pre-cut version of the foam is available for $30 from fancyfoamy.com -- the "1.5 lb Beefy foam" / "outdoor" option would be close to what I built.

Here's a video of flying my 32" Leadfeather Yak 55 in the backyard. (Check out the ending.)

Motor options:

For outdoor combat, I think a heavier setup with a 40g motor is better:

FC 28-22 Brushless Outrunner 1200kv 14.5A 39g  FC2822  $5.95
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=5354

GWS EP Propeller 10x6 (6pcs/set) GWS-DD-1060  $4.68
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=10035

FC 28-12 Brushless Outrunner 1534kv 16A 39g FC2812 $5.95

GWS EP Propeller 8x4 (6pcs/set) GWS-DD-8040  $3.54
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=10046

You'd want to use the 10x6 prop with the 1200kv motor or the 8x4 prop with the 1534kv motor.

Hobbyking SS Series 18-20A ESC (card programmable) HK-SS20A-HW $7.80

Gens ace LIPO 800mAh 20C 11.1V lipo battery pack 98P-20C-800-3S1P  $7.40

Other batteries that should work well are the Turnigy 1000mAh and the Gens ace 1000mAh.

A lighter setup with a 24g motor is better for 3D flying, while still being good enough for outdoor combat.  Here are some options for 24g motors:

Turnigy 2730 Brushless Motor 1300kv T2730-1300 $8.54
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=8617

hexTronik 24gram Brushless Outrunner 1300kv HXM2730-1300  $7.99

Turnigy 2730 Brushless Motor 1500kv T2730-1500  $9.20
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=8618

hexTronik 24gram Brushless Outrunner 1500kv HXM2730-1500  $8.59
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=4859

26gr 1500kv motor $12.50
http://www.e-foamy.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3_5&products_id=22

TowerPro 9g w12A Brushless Speed Controllers TP_w12A $9.89
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=659

Gens ace 450mah 3S1P 11.1V 25C Lipo battery pack 53g 98P-25C-450-3S1P  $4.35
http://www.hobbypartz.com/98p-25c-450-3s1p.html

With a 1500kv motor, you'll want to use a smaller prop like the GWS 7x3.5 (this is what I was flying in the video, but I think the 1300kv/8x4-prop combo works better; more thrust).  I get a flight time of around 6 minutes with the 3S 450mAh battery.  A larger 3S battery (800mAh to 1000mAh) could be used for streamer-combat flying.

The GWS 8x4 prop works well with the 1300kv motor:

GWS EP Propeller (DD-8040 203x102mm) (6pcs/set) GWS-DD-8040  $3.54
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=10046

This prop saver tends to be a better fit for 8x4 props on the 24g motors:

Pushrods can be made using carbon-fiber rods and music wire:

One thing that can help is to make the heat shrink a bit "short" on each end so the CA can get in between the music wire and the carbon rod.  Music wire with a .040" diameter will also work.  Using Dubro Mini E/Z Connectors on the servo control horns makes it easier to adjust the lengths.

Below is what I ended up using for carbon.  I found that with the heavier foam and a 24g motor the plane tended toward being tail heavy, so I mounted the tail servos a good ways forward to compensate.  This may be less the case with a 40g motor (like the FC 28-22).

Wing spar:  7mm x 30" strip
Elevator spar:  5mm x 13" strip
Elevator push rod:  0.070" x 15.25" CF rod + 0.030" or 0.040" wire
Rudder push rod:  0.070" x 15.375" CF rod + 0.030" or 0.040" wire
Aileron push rods:  0.070" x 5.75" CF rod + 0.030" or 0.040" wire

Here are PDF files I've created for 22" and 25" versions of the Leadfeather Yak 55.  (I created them by manipulating the "EPPYak55-22_full.pdf" file from rcgroups.)  They can be printed on standard 8"x10.5" letter-sized paper (just make sure you set "Page Scaling" to "None").

To cut out the foam I printed the sheets, taped sheets together as needed, attached sheets to the foam with double-side tape, and then cut through with an exacto knife.  I used a metal ruler for the straight lines and free-handed the curves, following the printed lines on the sheets.

Below is a 28" version.  Building this with 9mm 1.9# EPP foam may be the best size for a great foamy-combat plane.

Here's a video of indoor combat taken with FlyCamOne2 mounted above cockpit area of my 32" Leadfeather Yak. First part is a bit of flying with rear-facing camera, then front-facing during streamer combat, with a couple of crashes. Edited using VirtualDub.

Here's some video of flying around with the Leadfeather Yak. At about 1:40 is some inverted flying, which looks like you're walking on the ceiling.
